Open Letter of the MRCI member organizations

1ro de abril 2004

The Movement for the Rebuilding of the Fourth International will hold an Open Conference from April 20 to April 22 to discuss the steps to be taken to build a new international organization of labor. A statement has also been published, calling on "all vanguard activists from the class-minded left to join in common discussions with us, to work out a programme and chart the perspectives for refounding the Fourth International". As far as we are concerned, the appeal postulates the four basic tenets of the MRCI"s principles, i.e.: the strategy of socialist revolution and the dictatorship of the proletariat as present-day tasks; the fight against class collaboration; the need of a social and/or political revolution in the former workers" states and a strategy of struggle against capitalism based on a program of transitional demands.
Around the same date, from April 17 to April 25, the Second Conference of the Trotskyist Fraction-International Strategy will also take place. All member organizations will be attending the event: the Argentine PTS, the Mexican LTS ContraCorriente, Estrategia Revolucionaria-Quarta Internacional from Brazil, our Chilean section, Clase contra Clase and also supporters and sympathizers coming from Venezuela, France, Great Britain, Germany and Spain.
In the face of these two major meetings to be held in Buenos Aires by those who raise the need of refounding the Fourth International, we address to you in an attempt to try and come together in a common effort to hold a single common meetings of all those who claim allegiance to the Fourth International, its legacy and its programme.
As you might probably know, a similar initiative was posed some time ago by Trotskyist Fraction members in Europe to a leader of Progetto Comunista, to whom we told about our proposal.
In spite of our differences, which are publicly known, with the MRCI members, we fully agree with the four demands posed in the statement -above all we agree with the need of taking concrete steps leading to the rebuilding/refoundation of the Fourth International. This need has become sharper today in the present world scenario. Furthermore, we need to fight against those currents speaking in the name of the Fourth International, like the United Secretariat, who have written off the strategy of revolution and are busy trying to get revolutionaries assimilated into parties or movements commonly built with the reformists, or are else pursuing class collaboration. The USec has not not only given up on the strategy of the dictatorship of the proletariat, but it has also capitulated to class collaboration, a drift that has led to the participation of Miguel Roseto, main leader of Democracia Socialista, the Brazilian bougeois government headed by Lula da Silva.
Both the MRCI and the TF-IE have made a timely denunciation of this opportunistic policy pursued by that current (as well as others by the British SWP) and also agree on the fact that a genuine refoundation of the Fourth International can only come about by waging a fierce political struggle against those currents. This important common ground that we have is a platform on which we can take common steps towards refounding the Fourth International. If we failed in our endeavor to make a common meeting next April in Buenos Aires, it would be a sign of mean sectarianism. Looking forward to a positive response to our call, we send fraternal regards to you.
